2 People Injured on RT 114

2 people were seriously injured when a truck driver merging onto Route 114 in Rhode Island, slammed into the back of a vehicle in a merge lane. The accident happened around 5:30 Tuesday evening.

According to initial reports, the truck driver slammed into the back of the vehicle, and proceeded to slam into several trees on the side of the highway. The man that was driving the truck was not injured.

The driver and passenger of a four door sedan were immediately transported to a nearby hospital with severe injuries that were reported as non-life-threatening.

Route 114 lanes were temporarily closed while emergency units responded and transported the two victims from the scene of the crash. The closure lasted for about 25 minutes. The right lane was closed for about an hour while cleanup crews removed debris from the road and embankment.

A driver that was trailing closely behind the truck said the truck driver slammed directly into the back of the other vehicle putting it into a tailspin. Investigators are still questioning possible witnesses. They did make a formal statement that the accident was not due to impairment.

The accident is still under investigation and the status of the victims is still unclear. There are not further reports at this time.
