A ski-lift accident in Carrabassett Valley, Maine left several riders injured after the lift broke at the Sugarloaf Ski Resort in Maine. More than 100 riders were trapped for over an hour and nine were injured as the result of the accident.

According to reports, a derailment on one tower caused the lift’s cable to skip over the edge of a pulley causing five of the lifts to fall to the ground. The chairs fell more than 25 feet before hitting the ground.

Eight riders were rushed to Franklin Memorial Hospital in Farmington, Maine, and are being treated for injuries. The condition of the eight riders is still unclear. A ninth person that was originally was taken to Franklin Memorial Hospital, was immediately taken by helicopter to Maine Medical Center in Portland, ME.

The resort stated that the lift will be closed until preliminary investigations are completed and it is cleared by the state to resume operation.

There are no further reports regarding this accident.
