Boating Deaths Down for 08 in Minnesota
According to year end statistics Fewer boaters died last year in Minnesota lakes. Last year there were 12 people who died last year from boating accidents. This number is down from 15 in 2007. According to the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources the decline in boating fatalities is because more people are now wearing life preservers than previous years. The other reasons are directly related to harsher alcohol laws.
Statistics of the previous year show of the 12 deaths, 11 were single boat accidents and 5 were alcohol related. Due to the frigid waters in Minnesota 5 deaths were related to cold water.
Other factors that could be directly related to the decrease in fatalities and accidents could be a decrease in the number of boaters. Due to the increase in gas prices last summer it left many boating enthusiast at home. While authorities don’t believe the rising gas prices kept a large majority of boats docked, it certainly could have played a part in the decrease of accidents.
This number includes both motor and non motor water crafts.
