Pennsylvania Modular Building Collapse

A Pennsylvania modular building collapsed today in Pittsburgh, PA and it may have resulted in a snowy winter. While the cause of the collapse may have been a result of excessive snow, officials say it’s unlikely. The collapse of the building resulted in one minor injury and excessive property damages.

According to a local business owner Jonathan Kemper, “over the last several years organizations and businesses in Pennsylvania have been expanding the sizes of their buildings by building modular units.” While most modular buildings in Pennsylvania are built under state building codes, an infrastructure that’s built prior to the 1980’s should be maintained on a yearly basis.

A modular building is attractive to companies because installation is fast and affordable because all the components used to construct a modular building are already built. Due to the downturn in the economy, a quicker assembly is less disruptive to the day to day operations of a business and is often more affordable to the business owner.

Micah Misiak, a representative from Modular Nation, stated “many commercial, government and educational groups are exploring modular buildings in Pennsylvania due to the fast implementation and low cost.” Mr. Misiak also stated “modular buildings have to conform with local codes in order to pass inspection and such codes are in place to protect individuals from catastrophic events.”
