Icy Conditions Cause Several Accidents

Heavy snow is causing problems in areas in and around Pittsburgh.  Accidents south of Fort Pitts Bridge, I-279 and I-376 have been blamed because of slippery and icy roads. All three accidents happened within hours of each other. Roads coming into and out of Pittsburgh are seeing long backups for commuters in the city. Earlier in the afternoon, there was one crash that sent 2 people to the hospital with minor injuries.

Up to five inches of snow is likely in the metro area with heavier pockets of snow likely north of the city. Snow trucks are out in full force and crews are using salt on the primary and secondary roads. Local officials are advising motorists traveling in and out of the city to use caution and plan more time for travel. Earlier in the day there were two reported accidents but no injuries were reported.

9 Remain in Hospital after Pile up

According to the latest count, one person was killed and close to 20 others were injured in a 50 car pileup outside of Nashville, Tennessee. The accident allegedly happened after a car collided into the back of a postal truck early Thursday.

According to initial reports the accident may have happened because of low visibility due to a high density of fog and icy road conditions. The accident which occurred on Vietnam Veterans Parkway in Hendersonville, TN was close to mile long which included more than 120 other vehicles that were able to stop short of the accident.

Emergency vehicles took 17 people to the hospital with back injuries and neck injuries. While most of the injuries were deemed as non life threatening, one person ended up dead and 9 others still remain in the hospital.

After the wreck, around a dozen motorists and passengers exited their vehicles and began looking in other vehicles for possible injuries. According to witnesses, the fog was so thick that they couldn’t see where the accident started or ended.

Local news outlets aired the accident and released a statement that all drivers should precede with caution in and around the Nashville and Hendersonville areas. The fog took several hours to clear out of the area. Emergency crews spent hours removing debris and vehicles from the scene of the accident.

There are no further reports at this time.

Accident in Allentown, PA Injures Two

2 people were taken to a local hospital after their vehicle was crashed into by a driver of an SUV in an Allentown, PA neighborhood Monday evening. The accident occurred just after 7 p.m. when a 1999 Ford Taurus was hit at the intersection of West Tilghman St. and North 15th Street. The Taurus ended up on the corner sidewalk of an Exxon gas station.

The driver and passenger of the Taurus were taken by ambulance to Sacred Heart Hospital with head trauma and broken bones, which were reported serious but not fatal. The driver of the SUV was evaluated at the scene of the accident and was not transported for medical observation.

I-15 Accident is Fatal

1 woman killed when her vehicle flew over 300 feet and crashed into an embankment.

A Salt Lake City, UT woman was killed on Friday after her vehicle hit a retaining wall coming off I-15.   Her car flew over 300 feet across a pond and crashing into an embankment after exiting onto a ramp.

The 21-year-old who was later identified as Maria L. Mejia, was found in a Lincoln Town car resting on an embankment off of Interstate 15. Reports indicate a man driving semitrailer notified local police after seeing the car smashed and resting partially in the pond.

Authorities are still unsure of how the accident occurred because there are no witnesses. While they have no witnesses they believe the driver may have been speeding due to how far the vehicle landed from the exit on I-15. Police estimated the car dropped close to 70 feet from the ramp before hitting the embankment below.

Police are still investigating the accident.
