In the News
On July 17, 2008, a 31-year old Texas Oilfield worker of Nabors Drilling USA, LP, was working on a drill site in Rhome, TX. The 31-year old Larry Mullins was crushed by oilfield equipment when a truck moving a piece of equipment suddenly trapped him crushing his hips and pelvis along with other internal areas of his body. The truck was being operated by the defendant in the case, Fowler Transportation, Ltd. Mr. Mullins was immediately air lifted and taken to shock trauma soon after the accident occurred.
An oilfield accident lawsuit proceeded and was filed by John David Hart in Fort Worth, Texas and Simpson, Boyd & Powers of Decatur, Texas against Fowler Transportation, Ltd. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of Mr. Mullins and his family. Today it was announced that a $9.5 million dollar settlement has been reached.

The Federal Employers’ Liability Act, also referred to as FELA was passed by Congress in 1908. The passage of FELA was passed due to catastrophic injury and deaths to railroad workers throughout the United States. FELA is set-up to provide workers with protection that would not be covered through workers compensation. It gives the victim the ability to collect damages directly from the employers. Damages are collected as a result of negligence by the company.
The compensation that is collected in a FELA case is generally those expenses related to medical costs, lost wages, inability to work and pain and suffering. A FELA case is handled differently than a workers compensation claim as the cases are heard by a jury. Due to the complex nature of FELA cases these types of lawsuit can take years before settling.
Some of the different types of injuries that are most common in FELA cases include:
- Mental Anguish
- Health Risk
- Repetitive Motion Disorder
- Brain and Head Injuries
- Exposure to Asbestos
- Burn Injuries
- Loss of Limbs
- Disability
- Soft Tissue Injuries
A major part of FELA lawsuits is proving negligence. An experienced attorney can provide the necessary skills to prove liability and establishing a fair compensation package. If negligence is established the victim may receive fair compensation for damages. Due to the long litigation process for FELA cases some plaintiffs must resort to alternative funding options. Because workers compensation may only pay a fraction of what the plaintiff deserves, they may need an additional stream of income until their case reaches a verdict.
At LawLeaf we understand that some railroad workers can’t just get by on workers compensation payment, hence, we work with many claimants in getting them into a lawsuit cash advance so they can stay afloat. If you have a pending or already settled FELA lawsuit and searching for a non recourse lawsuit loan, begin by contacting LawLeaf today.

Client Writes:
I am kindly writing to your company referring to my case. I applied with several companies for an advance against a workers compensation claim. Along with LawLeaf, I applied with several other advance companies during a two week period. I had some company’s interested in my case and others who never called or emailed me back. When I contacted your company, you were quick to respond by having one of your lenders reach out to me the same day I applied. I was approved by every company that I applied with who ended up looking at my case. I would like to satisfy your company by saying LawLeaf had the right lender to handle my case. Your company was able to match me up with the company that provided the best rates for my lawsuit cash advance.
The best part about the whole process was that I was hands off with your company. I didn’t have to explain my case more than once and in fact the only person on your end that I spoke with was the lender who took the case. I am not great with words but I do appreciate the value of your service and happy that I gave your company a shot in getting me an advance against my case.
I would say to those folks that are searching for a good company that provides a great service, Law Leaf is a great choice.
