The families of two coal miners who died in a 2007 accident have filed a civil lawsuit for $4 million dollars against Tri-Star Mining INC. The families are alleging that both coal miners died due to unsafe working conditions.

The widows and children filed a suit for the deaths of Mr. Wilt and Mr. Jones. According to reports, the two men were working in a coal pit on April of 2007, when a high wall collapsed, killing both men. The Federal Mine Saftety and Health Administration (FMSHA) cited Tri-Star Mining Inc., for violations that directly contributed to the accident. These violations included the failure to correct hazardous conditions and allowing miners to work under inadequate and unsafe conditions. The violation also included the failure to provide adequate examinations of the mine. Under the settlement, Tri-Star agreed to pay $105,324 in fines.

The Tri-Star mine is located in George’s Creek Coal Basin, which runs from Frostburg to Westernport. According to statistics, four coal miners have died in Maryland coals since 1996.
