DUI Driver Kills One

Harris County District Attorney’s office announced the arrest of a male in his late 20’s who allegedly killed a pedestrian while under the influence of alcohol. This was the second DUI in as many years. Over the last several years, Harris County has led the nation in DUI accident fatalities.

Several years ago the Harris County District Attorney’s office announced it received funding for an expansion in the anti-DWI No Refusal Initiative through 2013. The funding is being used to enable prosecutors and agencies to deploy the initiative on the weekends. The federal grant which totals nearly $700,000 is paying for 246 No Refusal weekend days. This gives the department nearly eight months of added enforcement. The federal grant does one thing; it helps fight a growing problem in the state.

The funds will pay for dedicated personnel to administer tests and prosecute those involved in DWI’s. If a person is expected to driving under the influence and they decline to take a voluntary test, District Attorney’s Office and police officers will work to get authorization to draw blood to determine levels.
