The federal government promised to pay more than $1 billion dollars by the end of March to thousands of black farmers. The lawsuit was filed over 10 years ago alleging that the Department of Agriculture (USDA) discriminated against the farmers. According to reports there have been a fair number of farmers who started the lawsuit that have since passed away.

The lawsuit alleged that the farmers requested low-interest loans that were denied or delayed. Unfortunately due to ongoing delays and being denied many black farmers missed planting season altogether. This was a significant financial disaster for many farmers who depended upon planting season. Over ten years ago, the USDA admitted that it discriminated against black farmers and promised they would be compensated fairly.

A month ago, the federal government promised it would pay more than $1 billion by the end of March to thousands of black farmers who complained of discrimination by the Department of Agriculture. While the USDA released a statement claiming they are very excited about the opportunity to close a gloom chapter in the USDA, compensation seems that it’s not coming soon enough.

Congress was to allocate $1.25 billion dollars by March 31st but unfortunately Congress has left for spring recess without making the payment.
