Latest News on BP PLC Oil Spill

It has been reported that over 30 lawsuits have been filed against BP PLC and other companies that ran the Transocean Deepwater drilling rig.(Transocean Ltd.). The lawsuits are a result of thousands of barrels of crude oil polluting the Gulf of Mexico. The number of lawsuits are expected to increase as attorneys throughout the United States are coming to the Gulf Coast to file suits on behalf of businesses, property owners, restaurant owners, fishermen, charter-boat captains, tourism companies, resort management companies, shrimpers and other individuals.

The oil spill could result in a major economic disaster to many people along the Gulf Coast. It is expected that many people and businesses alike could lose millions of dollars as a result to the oil spill. The spill is already considered one of the worst environmental disasters in U.S. history.  Lawsuits have already been filed in New Orleans federal courts, Louisiana, Alabama, Texas, Mississippi and Florida.

The lawsuits could be worth up to 1 billion dollars which is more than one times the amount awarded to plaintiffs involved in the Exxon Valdez disaster back in the 1989.

While the majority of the lawsuits are expected to be class action lawsuits, individuals can also file lawsuits in court and may receive money by providing liability.  Lawsuits against the defense are expected to outline negligent and reckless along with the violations of numerous statutes and regulations.

Many of the lawsuits allege the oil spill was caused when oil contractors from Halliburton Inc. improperly capped a well. Halliburton has denied any such allegation.
