A Los Angeles woman who was paralyzed during back surgery was awarded 1.5 million dollars for a medical malpractice lawsuit.
The plaintiff in this case, Shanay Bridges, sued the county after a surgery in 2005. According to her attorney, Ms. Bridges received a surgery to her back after a car accident. The result of the surgery left Ms. Bridges a paraplegic. According to reports Ms. Bridges has lost all use of her legs and will be confined to a wheelchair for the remainder of her life.
The surgery was suppose to relieve pressure from her back. The surgery took place at County Harbor-UCLA Medical Center soon after the car accident.
As a result of this case the county is now considering a revision of consent forms in which a physician must review all forms prior to a surgery.
